Benji Habichuela

ANTONI MIRANDA (Mallorca, 1960): He began playing classical guitar at age 13 and at 16 was giving concerts at the "Guitar Center" in Palma. He is the founder of several jazz groups, such as "Brossat" and "Téntol." He is the arranger and music producer of the album "Mallorcatur" (re-released in 2004) and the composer of the music for the television series "Mallorca Mágica." He has written scores for the JONDE (Spanish National Youth Orchestra) and has given classical guitar concerts with Jovan Milosevski throughout Europe. He has collaborated with musicians such as Ricardo Pla (drummer for the group "Irakere"), Alex Acuña (percussionist for the band "Weather Report"), Peter Erskine (drummer for "Steps Ahead," Michael Brecker, and Diana Krall), bassist Gary Willis, and Argentine pianist Lito Vitale. In his educational pursuits, it is worth mentioning his involvement with drummer Jimmy Weinstein's "Travelling School," where he participated in the annual jazz seminars and performed with his Big Band, "Miranda Jazz Combo." In 2007, he toured Spain with pianist Joan Martorell, with whom he recorded "Capturant un sospir." In 2008, he participated in the 14th Sa Pobla Jazz Festival with the Travelling School Band, and was the guitarist for the cantata "Rua fosca," which premiered at the Teatre Principal in Palma in October of that year. With the Miranda Jazz Quintet, he participated in the 11th Sa Pobla Jazz Festival (Mallorca), sharing the stage with Marcus Miller, Uri Caine, and Llibert Fortuny, among others. In 2007, they premiered "Jazztic," a show combining dance and jazz, which premiered in April at the Xesc Forteza Theatre and was later performed at the Auditorium in Palma, Ibiza, Madrid, and Valladolid. In May of that same year, they participated in the Düsseldorf International Jazz Festival, the "Rallye Jazz Festival." In 2011, they won the award for best jazz group from the Balearic Islands at the 4th Palma Jazz Festival and second place at the European level. They participated in the Jazz Expo in Sardinia, Italy. In 2012, they joined the Satoko Fujii Ensemble, with Satoko Fujii on piano, Jimmy Weinstein on drums, Natsuki Tamura on trumpet, and Lilli Santon on vocals. In 2013, they participated, along with journalist Carlos Garrido and actor Rodo Gener, in "Gothic Nights" at Bellver Castle. In August 2013, they played with saxophonist Noah Preminger and trombonist Dan Fox. In November 2014, they joined Chris Cheek's quintet. In 2016 He composed the music for two documentaries and the soundtrack for a short film, "Coplillas por Bombay," produced by ESCAC in Barcelona. In December, he participated in the "Alternatilla" Jazz Festival, playing with Dutch saxophonist Benjamin Herman. In 2017, he was the guitarist for the quartet accompanying the renowned singer Sheila Jordan in her only performance in Mallorca. In 2018, he accompanied singer Jay Clayton during her visit to the island. In 2019, he joined the "Airbag Ensemble," along with Andreu Riera (piano), Josep Francisco Palou (flute), Armando Lorente (vibraphone), Toni Cuena (bass), and Jaume Ginard (drums). He accompanied singer Carme Canela at the Sa Pobla seminar in the summer of 2019. In 2021, he participated with his jazz trio in the "Auditòrium Jazz Festival." in Palma” In 2022, he accompanied the prestigious trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah, former member of the group “Sun Ra Arkestra.” In 2023, he participated in the 4th Palma Jazz Festival with the “Guillespie Big Band” as director, composer, and music producer. This concert was a tribute to the trumpeter, who headlined the first edition of the Palma Jazz Festival in 1981. His educational concerts for schoolchildren are noteworthy: “Breu passeig pel jazz” (“A Brief Stroll Through Jazz”), “La llarga vida d’una melodía” (“The Long Life of a Melody”), “Sis cordes” (“Six Strings”), and “Patrimoni inmaterial de les Illes” (“Intangible Heritage of the Islands”). Recently (2025), he accompanied Tony Glausi (trumpet) in his concert in Mallorca and performed with the “Miranda Jazz Combo” at the art exhibition organized by the Inca City Council.

Born in Ávila in 1983, Pedro Mateo González has performed as a soloist with the ORTVE (Spanish National Radio and TV Orchestra), Castile and León Symphony Orchestra, Ecuador National Symphony Orchestra and the Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra under conductors such as Fernando Bustamante, Alejandro Posadas, Adrian Leaper and Leo Brouwer. He has performed in the major concert halls of Europe, Asia and the USA, including the Berlin Philharmonie and Jordan Hall in Boston. He has recorded for and been broadcast on Radio Nacional de España and released albums on both Naxos and Eudora Records. He also regularly performs chamber music with artists such as Pedro Chamorro, José Manuel Losada, Joaquín Riquelme García and André Cebrián. Pedro Mateo González has won several prestigious competitions such as the 2009 Boston GuitarFest, and the Concurso Permanente de Juventudes Musicales de España (Jeunesses Musicales Competition). ​ He taught at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón for several years, and is currently a professor of advanced musical studies at the Conservatori Superior de Música de les Illes Balears, Mallorca, and the Katarina Gurska School of Music in Madrid.

Jos Kamps (The Netherlands) graduated with honors from Codarts University of the Arts as the first ‘Master of Music’ in electric bass, studying under the legendary Michel van Schie (Anouk, The Voice, Candy Dulfer), with drums as his secondary instrument. Additionally, he pursued studies in Communication in Arts at the Royal Academy of Music in Denmark and Music Management at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston (USA). As a session bass player, musical director and backing vocalist, Jos is primarily active in the pop music scene. He has toured and performed worldwide with renowned artists including Blaudzun, Rowwen Hèze, Eric Steckel, Anita Doth (2 Unlimited). Jos specializes in band coaching and manages Bandcoach.nl, a leading band & artist coaching company in The Netherlands.

Born in Mallorca into the legendary Habichuela flamenco dynasty, Benji Habichuela is a musician whose artistry is deeply rooted in the traditions of flamenco while embracing a broad spectrum of contemporary influences. Raised in one of Spain’s most celebrated musical families, he developed an early passion for rhythm and performance, beginning his musical journey as a self-taught percussionist before expanding into guitar and composition. Throughout his career, Benji has collaborated with many of the most respected names in flamenco and world music, including Pitingo, Ketama, Pepe Habichuela, Antonio Carmona, Tomatito, Estrella Morente, José Mercé, Jorge Pardo, and Jerry González. His performances reflect both a profound respect for flamenco tradition and an openness to jazz, Latin, funk, and world music influences. Known for his exceptional rhythmic sensitivity, expressive musicianship, and captivating stage presence, Benji has performed throughout Spain and internationally, appearing in concert halls, festivals, and prestigious cultural events. Whether accompanying singers and guitarists or leading his own projects, he brings authenticity, passion, and virtuosity to every performance. Today, Benji continues to be one of Mallorca’s most prominent flamenco artists, exploring new musical directions while remaining firmly connected to the rich heritage of the Habichuela family. Recent projects have combined flamenco with jazz and other contemporary styles, further showcasing his versatility as a performer and creative artist.

Italian bassist Paola Zadra has established herself as one of the most versatile and respected bass players on the European live music scene. She began studying electric bass at a young age, developing her skills at the prestigious Centro Professione Musica in Milan and further refining her craft under renowned Italian bassists Dino D’Autorio, Paolo Costa, and Lorenzo Poli. Since launching her professional career in 2004, Paola has performed extensively throughout Europe, appearing on major stages and collaborating with numerous artists across rock, blues, pop, and television productions. Her impressive résumé includes performances alongside acclaimed Italian musicians such as Francesco Baccini, Marco Masini, Red Canzian, Omar Pedrini, Fabio Treves, and Gaetano Curreri. Known for her powerful groove, impeccable timing, and dynamic stage presence, Paola has become a sought-after session and touring musician. She is currently the bassist in the band of internationally acclaimed blues-rock guitarist Eric Steckel, bringing her energy and musicality to audiences across Europe and beyond. Together with Steckel's high-octane blues-rock performances, Paola provides the solid rhythmic foundation that drives the band's signature sound. Whether performing in intimate clubs, major festivals, or international concert halls, Paola Zadra consistently demonstrates the musical excellence, professionalism, and passion that have made her one of Italy's premier bass players.

Beyond his accomplishments as a performer, Fernando is internationally recognized for his handcrafted guitars, built using traditional techniques inspired by the great Spanish masters. From his workshop in Andratx, Mallorca, he creates bespoke instruments for discerning musicians while also teaching the craft of guitar making through specialized workshops and masterclasses. As a musician, Fernando has performed extensively as a soloist and ensemble leader, drawing inspiration from classical, Spanish, and Latin American traditions. His performances combine technical mastery with warmth, elegance, and a deep understanding of the instrument’s expressive possibilities. He currently leads a Latin American music trio while continuing to appear as a featured solo artist at concerts, festivals, and cultural events throughout Spain. A passionate ambassador for guitar culture, Fernando regularly shares his expertise through lectures and demonstrations on guitar construction and performance, including appearances at major guitar-related events in Mallorca.

Tanausú Luis Diaz is a Canarian guitarist residing in the Balearic Islands with a distinguished international career as a performer, composer, and teacher. His career spans more than two decades dedicated to the guitar, with performances in France, the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Portugal, Canada, and North America, where he has been recognized for his technical virtuosity and his ability to convey emotion through the instrument. He has won awards in various international guitar competitions and instrumental music festivals, establishing himself as one of the most representative figures of contemporary fingerstyle in the Spanish-speaking world. His style combines precision, sensitivity, and a deep understanding of musical language, transforming each performance into a unique experience. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Tanausú Luis is a tenured guitar professor at the Conservatory of Palma, where he trains new generations of guitarists and promotes pedagogical innovation in the teaching of the instrument.

Leonardo Bravo is an Argentine guitarist, graduate of the National University of Rosario. He has developed an international career as a soloist and teacher, performing and giving masterclasses throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. His repertoire spans from classical music to tango and Argentine folk traditions, with a strong focus on Latin American music. In recent years, he has deepened his artistic work through original compositions and arrangements inspired by his cultural roots. He studied with Prof. Inés P. de Zemp and furthered his training with distinguished musicians such as Abel Carlevaro, Paulo Bellinati, Victor Villadangos, and Eduardo Isaac, among others. He has received top prizes in several international guitar competitions. From 1991 to 2003, he served as Professor of Guitar at the National University of Rosario. Since 2004, he has been based in Japan, where he performs regularly and collaborates with leading musicians such as Shin-ichi Fukuda, Yasuji Ohagi, bandoneonist Ryota Komatsu, etc He has also appeared in major international festivals as a performer and teacher worldwide. As a composer and arranger, his works have been published by Gendai Guitar and other international publishers. His piece 5 Little Pieces (Trees, Men and the River) has been selected as a required repertoire in international competitions and academic institutions as Marshal University USA and Trinity College, England. From 2025 he is an artist of the Canadian label, Les productions d`OZ where he published several original compositions. WORKSHOPS

In Room 10 at Es Gremi, several exclusive guitar workshops and masterclasses will take place, each limited to a maximum of 12 participants to ensure an intensive and highly interactive learning experience.

The sessions are designed for dedicated guitar players who want to work closely with internationally acclaimed musicians and teachers in a focused small-group setting. Sessions are about 90 minutes. Tickets are only 29,- euro per workshop (excluding full day ticket of 69,-).

What makes a band sound tight, professional and convincing? In this practical workshop, experienced band coach Jos Kamps shares valuable tips on sound, groove, timing, arrangements, band interaction, stage performance and effective rehearsal techniques.Join as an individual musician and play together with other participants in a live band setting. Bring your own guitar, bass or drumsticks.

YOUNG TALENT CONTEST

The Mallorca Guitar Festival is dedicated to promoting guitar playing and musicianship for the next generation of talent. As part of the festival, we proudly present the Young Talent Guitar Contest.

Any guitar player under the age of 20 — born after October 10, 2006 — is invited to participate.

The contest will take place from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Participants may perform one piece of their choice in any musical style, with a maximum performance time of 5 minutes. A pre-selection may be part of the process. 

Prize

  • €1,000 voucher from Musicasa Palma

  • A live performance on the Main Stage (Sala 2) just before the evening concerts

Time Table

Doors Es Gremi open at 10:00. The workshops start at 10:00. All day there will be demonstrations, shows, clinics and jams. Doors close at 23:00.

Mallorca Guitar Festival is initiated by three music - and guitar- lovers with the aim to inspire as many young and old musicians with excellent musicianship and musical fun! These are: Mallorcan guitar hero and guitarbuilder Fernando Rubin, professional bass player Jos Kamps and drummer Kees de Jong.
